There are many ways to lower blood pressure. Some of them demand will power because it may mean giving up things you like. High blood pressure can also be hereditary and not just due to lifestyle so medication may also be needed to to reduce it.

Here are some tips:

1: Reduce your salt intake. Not only does this mean cutting down on salt in cooking and applied to you dinner, but eating less foods which the food industry insists on including in foods to make them tasty and desirable. This includes crisps, soups, sauces, pizzas etc

2: Cut down on your coffee intake.

3: Cut down or eliminate smoking.

4: Reduce your calorie intake if you are overweight in order to lose weight.

5: Take regular exercise. Remember to consult your doctor to see whether this is ok.

6: Stress can raise blood pressure so any means of reducing stress can also help to reduce blood pressure.

The lower end blood pressure reading isquite stable and cannot be lowered quickly without medication. The high end reading is much more erratic and can be elevated by exercise or stress.
Relaxing, meditation, lieing down, slow deep breating can all lower the high end reading, but only temporarily. Better see a doctor if it persists.

The quickest way to lower blood pressure is with herbs containing weak cardiac glycosides. Cardiac glycosides slow the heart while strengthening the contractions and relaxing blood vessels lowering blood pressure. The effects are immediate as soon as the cardiac glycosides enter the blood stream.

Keep in mind that some cardiac glycosides are very powerful and dangerous such as those from oleander and foxglove, which is why I stated weak cardiac glycosides. A few examples of weak cardiac glycoside sources are Cactus grandiflorus (night blooming cereus), lily of the valley or coleus forskohlii. Of the three, coleus forskohlii will be the easiest to find in health food stores.

Cardiac glycosides work by displacing calcium out of blood vessels, which causes the blood vessels to contract. Same reason calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are often prescribed for high blood pressure. Magnesium malate or magnesium citrate can also be used as natural CCBs to keep calcium out of blood vessel muscle so the blood vessels can relax. The effects are not quite as fast as cardiac glycosides, but regular supplementation can help keep blood pressure down in most cases.

Another option are plant sterols, which relax blood vessels as well. The highest herbal source of sterols is the plant jiaogulan (Gynostemma), which can be found online or in Asian markets.

Things like meditation, yoga and tai chi can lower blood pressure. However they work better when done regularly. You get better at doing them with practice and your body gets better at relaxing. If you wait until there is a problem it would be harder to focus your thoughts. It is better to prevent the problem by practicing one or more of them on a regular basis.

I was able to trigger a relaxation response quickly using association. As you start to become deeply relaxed mentally say a word or number and repeat it 3 times. After doing it for a while you can relax yourself just by saying the number or word.

I chose this as the best answer due to seeking immediate ways of reducing blood pressure. I like the idea of an immediate response/trigger. I have always enjoyed the idea of Tai Chi and yoga. Incorporating these methods in-conjunction with traditional methods should illicit the response I am looking for. Thank you for sharing your answer.
