Can memory loss be a side effect of some blood pressure medications?

Dad's been having some memory problems all the sudden - getting lost when he knows the area we're in, forgetting to put on his seatbelt, etc. - and he's making an appointment with the doctor about it, but is this possibly one of the side effects of his blood pressure medicine?

So does blood pressure medication cause memory loss, blackouts, confusion and similar mental problems?

Is daddyevil on any cholesterol lowering medications, such as statins or Lipitor? My mother was having the same symptoms as a result of a statin drug. My sister even mentioned that my mother would go to use a restroom in a restaurant and actually got disoriented and waited until someone came to get her. She got so confused that we could not permit her to drive herself anywhere because she would forget where she was and would get lost in areas that should have been very familiar to her. Almost immediately after she stopped the medication, her memory improved dramatically.

I don't know if there are any high blood pressure medications that can cause forgetfulness, (but will continue to search). It is possible that if his blood pressure is not under control that mini-strokes can occur and the resulting memory loss and confusion. Regardless, I hope the underlying cause can be identified. I know how frustrating my mother's symptom's were for her and how concerned our family was as a result. I wish you both well. What is the name of the high blood pressure medication that D.Evil is currently taking?

I am currently taking the generic brand of Cozaar 100mg. (Losartin 100mg)

I seem to get "lost" if anything changes about the route I am driving. The other night, it was raining, and I was on the hiway I drive twice a day, and got "lost". Another night, the lights of a town ahead of me went out, and it took me all the way past the town before I could figure out where I was.

Today, I got a speeding ticket. I looked down at my speedometer and was doing 72 mph going around some cars. I don't remember going past the last cars, and the next thing I do remember is seeing the flashing lights of the police vehicle WAY after I had finished passing the cars. (The officer said I was driving 104 mph when I passed him. I NEVER drive that fast!)

To say the least, I am worried about this! IF it is the medicine, it wouldn't be the first one I've had trouble with. Medicines don't always affect me the way they do other people. My doctor usually calls and asks if I have noticed anything unusual a few days after I start a new medicine.

That is frightening, (not to mention dangerous), Daddyevil. I am sorry to hear that. I can't imagine speeding over 100mph and not being able to recall it. It is possible that it could be due to the medication.

Cozaar can have rare side effects that cause mental disturbances such as depression, dizziness, feeling like you are going to faint, migraine, anxiety or panic disorder, blurred vision, etc.. The combination drug Cozaar (Losartan)/ hydrochlorothiazide can cause mental or mood changes, seizures, slurred speech and dizziness.

Individuals do react differently. My own mother had the less common (severe) reaction to statin drugs and was not diagnosed until months later. Perhaps you doctor can change your prescription before something more serious happens. You are fortunate that you didn't have an accident traveling over 100mph. Be careful, Daddyevil, (don't drive).

It is hard to be careful when I don't even remember doing it in the first place.

I have always been a careful driver, always used my seatbelt, I normally drive three miles over the limit, and give myself extra time to go somewhere (just in case).

I have been having several of those symptoms! I just thought it was my blood pressure acting up on me. The Losartin doesn't control my high blood pressure as well as the Licinopril did. (I had a severe allergic reaction to the Licinopril in February of this year that put me in the ER for over six hours. Tongue swelled up HUGE, and throat swelled closed.) My BP spikes and my vision blurs, I get dizzy, and have to sit down, or I will fall down, I break out in a heavy sweat and get sick to my stomach.

Some blood pressure medications can have this effect on some people. Make sure he discusses this with his doctor, and takes his medications, or at least a list with him to his visit. Until then, you could call and speak with the pharmacist about it. Sometimes, doctors will have you to do that anyway, because it can be caused by the medications he takes together, rather than just one specific medication.

Another good resource is the Mayo Clinic site, which can give a lot of good information about medications and their side effects.

Hi Daddyevil,

Blood pressure medications can have strange effects on different people. I have taken numerous types of BP medications and some of them caused mild effects, but not as severe as what you have described.

However, from what you have told us, I am convinced there is some other BP medication that will keep your BP much more consistent. I have serious doubts that the BP medication is causing all the effects you listed; however, the BP medication may be aggravating some other medical problem or medication and the combination may be causing your problem.

I urge you to visit your physician soon regarding this condition. I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks, everyone.

Prettyevil already had an appointment with out doctor this next week. I phoned the office and left a message that I would like to be seen, also. I hope the doctor can work me in around the same time as Prettyevil.

@ Poppa Joe: I am not currently taking any other medications. Just the Losartan for high blood pressure. I don't know of anything else that could be compounding the problem. Unless stress and being tired all the time are the other factors. (The Wal-Mart where I work is undergoing some major adjustments with staffing issues. (The Store Manager was told to quit or be fired! ((That part was pretty funny if you knew the circumstances!))) We are having to run the Electronics department with only half the staff that the store staffing sheets call for based on the amount of money being brought in by the department. A lot of the time, I AM the staffing for that department, the Sporting Goods department, Hardware, and Fabrics and Crafts departments. When I get home, I usually just eat and go to bed!)

Hopefully, we can find out something this next Wednesday.

Good luck to your, Daddyeveil! I am sorry to hear about the stress level to which you are exposed on a regular basis at work.

I don't believe the Wal-Mart chain is being operated in accordance with the original plan and wishes of Sam Walton. I believe the younger family members who are now in charge are ruthless in their quest to make more and more money each year with no regard for the welfare of the Wal-Mart employees. I do not believe that Sam Walton would have approved of this.
