Question

Asked 10/3/2011

Everyone talks about how bad high blood pressure is in pregnancy. What about low blood pressure in pregnancy?

I'm currently in my second pregnancy, and fortunately my blood pressure barely changes at each checkup. So I'm not worried about myself. I've been told that I have lower than normal blood pressure but nothing worrying.

However, I'm curious as to what effects low blood pressure can have on a pregnancy. Can it be as bad as high blood pressure? What can happen to mother and baby?

Lower blood pressure is not common in pregnancy but yes, there CAN be some cause for concern. The question is HOW low is too low. The one thing to know is the baby will probably be fine because they get what they need from you no matter what. Often they get what they need to your detriment.

Mine was popping off at 80/50 and that was too low. I ended up back in the hospital after delivery in congestive heart failure. Did it do anything to my baby? No, he was perfectly fine in every way of fashion. My low blood pressure was a sign that my heart wasn't handling the pregnancy well at all and I spent a few days in. Today I am fine with no signs of anything being wrong at all with me or my heart. That did end my having more children, though.

Point it out to your doctor if it's very low. Low means it needs to be 90/60 or less. Otherwise, don't worry about it. But if it's low, tell them you are concerned and keep telling them. I wish you and the baby the best!

Thank you. =)

I'm really not worried, just curious.

With my first pregnancy my doctor said that it was almost pointless taking my BP since it stayed exactly the same throughout the pregnancy and varied very little. And this one looks to be shaping up the same way, thankfully!
