Hardening of the arteries Have toe numbness and had a doppler test of my legs. Dr's office called and said I have hardening of the arteries and he wants to speak to me about it. I have normal blood pressure, mid to low colestrol numbers. What should I do to prevent the problem from getting worse and causing the really bad effects that hardening of the arteries can have. I am a 66 year old male otherwise in good health.

Hardening of the arteries can be caused by different things, so the choices you and your doctor have for treatment can vary. I realize you said your blood pressure and cholesterol are normal, but it wouldn't hurt to manage your blood pressure and stress carefully, make sure your diet doesn't contribute to diabetes, or add bad cholesterol. A low fat, high fiber diet is a very good idea.
The medical name for hardening arteries is atherosclerosis, and it happens when substances called plaques build up on the inside of the vessel walls. Cholesterol is one of those substances, which is why lowering it in your diet is important to prevent the condition. Atherosclerosis is a condition that runs in families, so you may have an increased chance for it if relatives have had it. Not enough exercise and getting older can both contribute to it as well.
Obesity, stress, smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes are all factors which increase hardening of the arteries, so you'd want to make changes to address those as a main line of treatment.
Depending on your case, your doctor may prescribe medication to reduce blood clots or relax the blood vessels. He may recommend getting more exercise, which not only helps keep vessels more flexible, but can also build better circulation.

I would look into adding alkalizing food to your diet. Most food that we eat turns into acid in our blood stream. The arteries would literally be eaten through by the acid in our blood. As a defense mechanism the arteries will add a barrier to the walls of your arteries,we call this plaque.
Once your blood turns into a more alkaline base the plaque will remove itself on it's own accord.
