Has anyone you PERSONALLY know lived 100 years or more? I recently visited one of our neighbor's mother-in-law. She is 104 years now and she's so active that it encouraged me not to be lazy. She frequently gets up and dances in some of her favorite songs, traditional folk songs and also encourages us to dance.

My mother has worked in a nursing home for as long as I've been alive. When I was younger I would go to work with her and visit with the elderly people. One woman, extremely sweet and used to give me a butterscotch candy every time I saw her, was 100 years old the year she died. She was always very active and wanted me to take a walk with her down the hallways.
Obviously since I only visited her I didn't know her really well, but I did know her and she was definitely 100 because it was announced in the local papers when she died. She was the oldest resident of the nursing home so it was 'big news' in a little town.

My grandmother lived to be 105, though when we were looking back at some records after she died, we found she could have actually been 107. When she was young, they didn't celebrate birthdays and so I don't think she actually knew for sure how old she was. She grew up on a farm in Ireland. They were poor and she eventually emigrated to the US.
Secrets of longevity? Well, she didn't follow the usual advice -- she loved to eat animal fat -- bacon, lots of butter, etc., and she drank a high ball with whiskey every day. She was a servant and a live-in cook, and worked until she was 84, when her well-to-do employer found out her age and dumped her. Though she did go for walks, she was not particularly athletic. Her vision and hearing remained fairly good, and she liked to read the headlines of the newspaper to know what was going on, though she wasn't a particularly avid reader.
I suppose she somehow remained young, even though her life was hard. She always pushed herself and didn't complain. Having good genes, I guess, helped too.

Yes, I knew this one lady who lived in a nursing home and she was 102 and she was a pianist. She entertained the residents in the lobby with her piano playing on Sunday afternoons. One day my daughter and I went into the nursing home and my daughter was carrying her violin. This lady stopped her and asked her if she played the violin. My daughter told her yes and the lady said, "Will you play with me, I used to be a piano teacher?" My daughter said yes and began to take her violin out. The lady went to the piano and took out her music books from the inside the bench seat.
She flipped through the book and asked my daughter what she knew. They selected some pieces and the lady said, "I will you a que to start." She did and they played beautifully together for about 45 minutes. Then the lady looked at my daughter and said, "I am tired now. You play beautifully. Will you come back and play with me again?" My daughter told her yes.
There was no generation gap that day between the elderly lady and the 20 year old. It was quite an inspirational experience. It was the kind you almost had to be there to understand what I am attempting to say with words.
