If your blood pressure is 112/102 pulse 187 should you go to the ER? Just started bp meds 2 weeks ago. This weird drop & spike comes on randomly and lasts about 10 min. Have a mild heart murmur too. |

How long has your pulse been at 187? That's really high unless you just stopped exercising - and even for exercising that's usually over your target heart rate and dangerous. Are you having chest pain? If so, might be time to get to the ER.
Your diastolic (the bottom number) number is very high and it looks like your blood pressure medicine isn't quite doing what it's supposed to be doing. Spikes when you are on BP meds means you either need a new medication (not uncommon; some people have to test various meds before finding the right one) or you need something to increase the effectiveness of your current medication.
If you're feeling ill, faint, dizziness or otherwise unwell and think it's an emergency then head to a doctor immediately. You definitely need to get a doctor to work on your blood pressure medicine though.

Yes, you should have someone drive you to your local hospital emergency room. All high blood pressure medications affect the heart and blood vessels. Adverse affects can include a change in heart rhythm whether it be fast, slow or irregular. Your blood pressure is a concern as well at 112/102 and the heart rate much too fast. Seek prompt medical care as a precautionary measure and allow the doctors to get your blood pressure and heart rate stabilized.

With a pulse of 187 (I'm hoping that's a typo) you should either call the physician that prescribed your medication now for advice or have someone take you to the ER. That's a very high pulse rate. It's considered the target heart rate (actually higher than a target rate) for someone doing cardiovascular exercise. If you're not exercising and have a HR of 187, something is very wrong.
The blood pressure is also high, but there's no way of knowing if that's high for you or lower than what your originally high blood pressure was, since you haven't posted what your blood pressure was before taking your medication.
The internet isn't the best place to seek medical advice when you apparently have a physician that you can call. We're only guessing in the dark, based on what you post. We don't have your medical history in front of us nor are any of us physicians. Your best and safest route is to contact your physician or go to the Emergency Room.

Sometimes when we experience these spiking bp's, it's because we need a combination instead of just one type of medicine. The heart rate of 187 may also be scaring you and causing the rise in bp.
The heart rate of 187 is way too high, although not always dangerous, but is cause for concern. Do you feel any irregularities, like skipping beats? How about dizziness, pauses or shortness of breath?
If my heart rate was that high, I would go to the ER. If it lasts for any extended period of time, heart failure, again not always an emergency, is a possibility.
In other words, nobody knows the answer to what's causing the high bp or the tachycardia until you get it checked out, and since there are possibilities of harm, it would be a good idea to go to the ER during an episode. If you do not have another episode, make an appointment to see your doctor ASAP and get it resolved.
DO NOT go to the ER by your own mode of transportation.....call an ambulance. You are not safe to drive. If someone drives you and an emergency occurs, it should be the ambulance team because they have the necessary equipment to help you if you should need it.
Good luck to you.

A pulse of 187 should be an ER visit, unless you are exercising heavily.
A blood pressure of 112/102 is a little bit strange, too. There is normally a larger difference between the top number (systolic pressure) and the bottom number (diastolic pressure). A normal blood pressure might be 112/70, while a high blood pressure might be 150/102.
Are you feeling other symptoms? Dizziness, nausea or vomiting, weakness, any pain in your chest, arms, neck or jaw? Are you new to measuring your blood pressure? If you aren't having any symptoms, and you are new to measuring your blood pressure, you might just try taking your pressure several times, remembering to stay still and quiet, and making sure that the cuff is tight and in the proper place on your arm.

Epinephrine (adrenaline) can cause such a spike of both blood pressure and pulse. Increases in epinephrine can occur for several reasons, but being that it is not consistent a good possibility is anxiety attacks. Has your doctor considered this possibility? And check what kind of blood pressure medication you are taking. Calcium channel blockers are the most commonly prescribed hypertension drug, but a beta blocker may be a better choice since this will reduce epinephrine release.

OCJenny, I am unsure of how you obtained those vital signs, but if you believe there is any chance they could be correct call 911. Right now, go.
If you feel like reading the rest of this later, here goes, do not read this instead of calling 911, I mean it.
Here is the problem with those vital signs. You have a relatively low systolic blood pressure (top number), coupled with a pretty high diastolic blood pressure (bottom number.) The result is that you have an exceptionally low pulse pressure (systolic-diastolic). For your reference, a normal pulse pressure for an adult is around 40. A low pulse pressure is 25 or less. Yours is 10. It is for this reason that I wonder if your measurement is even accurate it is so low. Reasons for a low pulse pressure include aortic stenosis (narrow aorta), heart failure, and shock.
You would expect to be tachycardic with a pulse pressure like that (and at over 180 you surely are!) SO, call 911. The best case scenario is that they will take your vital signs, and the ones you got will not be accurate. Worst case scenario is death if those are accurate vital signs. If you were in my ambulance with vital signs like that you would have pads on your chest in case we needed to cardiovert or defibrillate you.
You do not mention symptoms of any kind, nor do you mention history other than new blood pressure medicine. So, it is difficult for me to tell you how your ER visit will look. regardless, you need checked. Please let us know how you are doing after they check you out.
