Question

Asked 5/28/2009

Is this normal? My blood pressure was 106/87 and my resting pulse was 117.

Is this normal? I was actually happy and in a great mood when it was taken, and I was not stressed. I just finished chemo 2 1/2 weeks ago. 4 treatments of a/c and 4 treatments of taxol. I've been having an issue of fluid retention in my abdomin, neck and face. When it's really bad, I feel dizzy and get a head ache. My neck will feel strange and I'll feel like I'm going to pass out. When I take a water pill I'll loose several pounds of fluid and feel better. Normally when my resting pulse is high it's in the 80's. My normal blood pressure is somewhere between 90/60, 100/70 to 110/82 if it's up. I'm questioning if the chemo is causing this.

OK very good blood pressures and the pulse rate is a little high but not that bad. and what you gone though it very good and i like to see a resting heart rate of between 70 to 75 resting. but in this case this is a very good pulse rate because of the trama the body has been though with the chemo !

A normal blood pressure is 140/90 for most people. A blood pressure of 135/80 is optimal for patients with diabetes, renal insufficiency, retinopathy, congestive heart disease, coronary heart disease, peripheral vascular occlusive disease, or cerebrovascular disease. A normal pulse is between 60-100 beats per minute (bpm) while at rest.

Normal blood pressure is 120/80! A resting pulse of 117 is high, I would normally expect a pulse of this in exercise. You could have sinus tachycardia. Sinus tachycardia can be caused by various factors including fever, stress and anemia. Certain medications and also dehydration can also cause sinus tachycardia

You are right to be concerned about your pulse rate because anything over 100 is considered a high pulse rate requiring a doctor's attention. However, first, be sure you are getting an accurate reading. One way to check your pulse is to use your middle and ring fingers high up on your neck a little bit forward of where your jaw ends - feel around lightly until you find your pulse. Using a watch/clock with a second hand, count the number of beats for 15 seconds and multiply by four and that gives you your bpm (beats per minute). You can also do this on the inside of your wrist (where your wrist meets your arm, closer to your thumb side)

If after checking your pulse rate is truly 117 then it means your heart is not pumping blood as efficiently as it should/could.

A normal pulse rate is about 60-100 beats per minute (BPM) and usually falls to about 40 BPM when you are sleeping. A rapid pulse can be a sign of heart diseases, thyroid problems, emphysema, and/or problems with your heart's chambers.

There are also several other things that can cause your pulse to be elevated for a short period of time including:
Caffeine or other stimulants like tea, coffee, tobacco etc.
Eating a heavy meal
Stress
Some medications
Fever
Anemia or Vitamin deficiency
Heavy, physical exertion

Being on chemo and having the stress and strain emotionally and on your body could certainly be a reason your pulse is high. However, prolonged periods of a fast pulse are not good and you really should consult your doctor as soon as possible. You need to err on the side of caution and get checked out. Take care.
