Medicine I have a mother in law who is on 3 different types of blood pressure medicine. She is 85 years old and has jsut gotten out of the hospital for weakness, dizziness, no energy. Could this be due to the medicine she is on. |

Call her doctor. He can answer your questions. If not, change doctors. If you have a computer, you can also type in the medication in the search engine. Web site will appear that will tell you the side effects of the medication/s. Talking to her doctor is your best solution. You may have to make an appointment. Doctors are not very easy to contact, but you can also leave a message for them and they will call you back with answers, when they have time.

There is no need I am aware of for anyone to be on 3 different anti-hypertensive medicines. Ask your pharmacist, NOT your mother's doctor or your doctor or anyone else''s doctor . Pharmacists study medications, what they do and how they work for 5 years to become licensed. Medical school takes 4 years and most med schools offer little if any training in medicines or how to prescribe them or take them unless they're specialists, and even they aren't that good at it.

You have not indicated what type of medicines your mother is taking. However they are several factors that could be causing the symptoms your mother is experiencing. Please also bear in mind that weakness, dizziness, no energy are common side effects of taking blood pressure medicines. However if these symptoms are persistent and you have a gut feeling something is not right, then take her to adoctor for a check up. However before you go to the clinic, check and record her blood pressure at home and do the following:
1. Check to see that your mother is taking the prescribed medicines at the correct intervals. By that I mean if she has medicines that she has to take twice a day for example then she would have to divide the time interval by 2 which would be 12hrs before she can take the next medicine. Patients often do not follow these intervals and thus overdose themselves. If that is not the case then lets go to the next step.
2. Ask the MD the blood pressure medicine dosage maybe too high. For example if she is on Metropolol or Lisinopril and she is taking, lets say 40mg of that daily or twice a day, then that dose may need to be decreased and only her Doctor can make those changes, wisely. Doctors are trained to diagnose patients medical problems, pharmacists are not. So he would be the only professional trained to figure out what is causing the signs and symptoms presented.
3. If she is on what is sometimes known as the" water pill" , lasix or furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide or HCTZ this is also known to reduce the blood pressure drastically, although this is not a blood pressure medicine, it acts like one by removing a lot of fluid out of the body via urine You may also want to ask your doctor about any of these drugs if she is taking them. All the meds I listed are in the group of what is known to be a diuretic.
4. Also check to see if she is not on any cardiac medicines, strong pain killers or anti-depressants, because a combination of these can also presentsimilar symptoms you mentioned like weakness, dizziness, no energy.
I would not ignore these symptoms at all. Very low blood pressure can be very dangerous. It is best you seek medical attention for her ASAP. I hope that helped.
