Question

What could be causing me to have bad muscle cramps or "charley horses" in almost EVERY part of my body?

I have been having charley horses in my legs, feet, calves, back, stomach and arms for several weeks now and I don't know why. I take synthroid for my thyroid and blood pressure medicine. I had the lap band about 3 years ago and lost about 60lbs. I have poor circulation in my legs and I have 6 herniated discs in my neck. I know it's a shot in the dark and there can be many causes for this sudden discomfort. I just don't understand why I keep getting these bad cramps. I try eating bananas but it doesn't seem to be helping. Any ideas?

Hello... I would start with a good brand of a multi vitamin as you may be lacking in a particular vitamin or mineral.

Lack of minerals often cause cramps, in paticular potassium but calcium and magnesium also. It is important to be drinking enough water to stay fully hydrated and to avoid diuretics.

Often when our bodies get low in potassium, muscle cramps can occcur. Since you are taking blood pressure medication, some of which deplete the bodies store of potassium, you need to contact your physician. Never take over the counter potassium supplements without your doctors approval. Too much or too little potassium can be harmful to us.

And since you are already eating foods high in potassium, its time to make that call to your doctor and follow his/her directions. Hope you feel better soon!

Your doctor should help you figure this out if it continues. Make sure that you get enough food with magnesium and calcium as well as bananas for potassium. Shell fish, beans and nuts are good. Stay hydrated. Some people get relief by drinking sports drinks like Gatorade or Powerade.
