What could be making me feel so cold all the time?

For a long, long time I have always felt warmer than anyone else in the room. I haven't worn a sweatshirt or sweater in six or seven years because I was so uncomfortably warm in them. Now, suddenly, the last two weeks or so I am just freezing all of the time. At night I cannot get warm. Last night I slept with a sweatshirt over flannel pajamas, under a heavy quilt and I was still cold.

Aside from being cold I feel fine. I am not running a fever. There is no indication that I have an infection of any kind. I have no other symptoms whatsoever. I don't have low blood pressure, slow heart rate or any chronic conditions that would be responsible. The cold feeling came on abruptly. One day I was fine and the next day I was cranking up the heat. Does anyone have a clue what my problem might be?

This, combined with you saying you've been having scent hallucinations, is a bit worrying. It sounds like something may be going on with the brain. I think it's really time to see a doctor as both those symptoms can be tied to a disconnect in the way the brain is receiving information and processing it. It's telling you you smell things that aren't there and it's telling you you are cold when there's no reason to be cold.

Sudden coldness can also be caused by sudden drop in blood pressure, changes in medication especially medications that affect the brain and even panic attacks, but with the phantosmia I think it's better safe than sorry and time to visit the family doctor for an opinion.

Until then may I suggest sleeping with a hot water bottle? I have trouble getting and staying warm - it runs in my mother's side of the family; she was always cold too - and I can literally be shivering in an 80 degree room, but if I have something hot directly against my skin it keeps me warm. Hot showers also warm me up and can keep me warmed up for a bit. If this works for you then it's small blood vessels or obstructed blood vessels, though the sudden change is still worrisome.

Glory, have you considered getting your thyroid checked? Hypothyroid can cause you to be intolerant to the cold. Other symptoms of hypothyroid are decreased energy, hair loss, and weight gain. Anemia is another common cause of feeling cold. Additionally, both can be treated.

Consider heading to your doctor's office. Your blood counts and thyroid function can be tested easily with a blood draw. Additionally, they may see something in your physical exam, or learn something in your history that could better clue them into what is going on. Praying you will feel warmer soon!

With previous symptoms of hyperthermia, then olfactory hallucinations and now hypothermia- that can be an indication of a pituitary gland dysfunction. The gland regulates numerous bodily functions including that of the endocrine system, (resulting in thyroid, metabolic disorder, hormone imbalances, hypoadrenocorticoism, chemical/electrolyte imbalances, etc.).

Hypothyroidism does produce cold intolerance, noticeable fatigue, weight gain, depression, etc., but thyroid dysfunction (alone without pituitary involvement), does not usually produce the olfactory hallucinations. (I have hypothyroidism). The pituitary dysfunction affects multiple bodily functions including that of the thyroid gland. Neurological disorders are possible as well. Epilepsy and temporal lobe seizures, brain injuries or inflammation can produce your symptoms as well.

A physical examination/testing is necessary to specifically identify the cause of your symptoms, GloryS1. The combination of symptoms without a recent illness/medications are concerning. Contact a doctor and have these symptoms properly diagnosed. It may not be due to anything terribly serious but, as a precautionary measure, it is adviseable to have these symptoms properly evaluated.

It appears all my symptoms were adverse effects to the medication I was taking for seizure control. Frequent palpitations and dizziness finally prompted me to seek medical attention.
